With each scheduled visit, we conduct a thorough clinical examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth. The examination will include an oral cancer screening and checking your bite, signs of periodontal disease, and tooth decay. We will also check your existing restorations to make sure that there is no decay present around the edges of your fillings and or crowns. Additionally, we will check any dentures that you may have to ensure that they are functional and not ill-fitting.

Our office uses state-of-the-art digital x-rays that save time, significantly reduce radiation exposure, and is safe even for young children. Digital x-rays let us view the inside of your teeth, gums, and jaw as well the spaces between teeth. With these images we can diagnose cavities, developmental abnormalities, and even hidden infections before they become serious.

A teeth cleaning removes dental plaque, which contains bacteria that leads to gum inflammation. This bacteria can lead to cavities and gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. A professional cleaning also removes tartar (hardened plaque) that can build up even with good brushing and flossing habits. We will identify potential problem areas and show you how to manage them.

Some patients need a more thorough cleaning, especially those that have not had regular dental cleanings. Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a deep cleaning that involves removing tartar below the gums, which requires local anesthesia. SRP’s can be critical in preventing more serious diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis and other chronic conditions.

Sealants are applied as a thin coating of resin on molars and premolars to prevent decay. The chewing surfaces of the teeth that are sealed are smoother and much easier to keep clean, and sealants are especially recommended for children. Decay can still develop in between teeth, where it is not possible to place the sealants, but flossing can decrease the chances of decay in these spaces.
